Words Are Spells

I love to read and write.

I’ve always been a loner, an outcast, I’ve never really found a place that I fit in.

I grew up in a religious cult, with half of my mind influenced by my free spirited & supportive mother who immigrated to the US from Colombia, and the other half raised by my outdoorsman, very traditional father who did all he could to raise me just the same as a son.

I was too religious, not religious enough. Not white, but not Latina. Lucky enough to have a stay at home mom, but also very sheltered to the ways the real world worked, when growing up in my small town in the PNW.

With no one I could really ever relate to all through school, I found refuge in the library. My elementary school librarian is someone who absolutely helped to shape my love of literature and put me on the trajectory of being a lifelong bookworm. She was kind, gentle, and caring. I will never forget Ms. Daniels, and the warm hug of the school library, my refuge.

When you get older, as we all know - your life gets a big hectic. Time for reading is probably the number one thing that gets cut from the list when you’ve got any free time to spare.

Lately I’ve been carving out dedicated time to read instead of watching tv. And it’s re-ignited my love of language. Today’s modern world is dominated by video. It’s more engaging, it uses more senses. The visuals included mean it’s easier to capture attention, even without your consent. For sensitive viewers like me, it can influence you in a way you notice - and even subliminally.

Reading has once again become refuge.

As someone who gets over-stimulated easily after almost a decade of entrepreneurial hustling, I’m craving a low stimulation lifestyle. When you read, you can look away, & explore a thought or concept in your life. You can pause, and connect what the writer is sharing with your own life and way of thinking, and connect dots, realize revelations, or experience something you’ve been mulling over just “click.”

For the last couple of years, I’ve been leaning into how the written & spoken word can help to influence my behavior, mindset, and life - for the better.

The people closest to me know that Rodney, my second husband, finally managed to get the courage to introduce himself to me after 6 months of passing each other by.

I do find it pretty interesting that this lines up with about 2 weeks that I was consistently listening to manifestations each night to find a romantic partner who would care for me and love me in a wonderful, healthy way.

Coincidence?

Maybe.

Whether you believe in the law of attraction, manifesting, energy work or not, I bet you would agree that the things you listen to (and write, and speak, and watch) can help shape your mindset and what you believe is possible.

Or what you deserve.

Or how you feel about yourself.

Words are so much more powerful than society admits.

I think even if it was pure coincidence that Rodney introduced himself to me at the same time I was trying to channel a prince charming into my life, I’m not sure if I would have approached the beginning of our relationship the same way - and that maybe could have changed the outcome, which is a very happy and strong relationship for over five years now.

I’ll save that story for another day - my point for this piece is that

  1. Words are powerful - so pay attention to the words you absorb & broadcast. They affect you & the life you lead whether you notice or not.

  2. Reading is a gentler way to step into someone else’s shoes, & I find it easier to absorb information in this less distracting way.

  3. Whether you believe words have the power to change reality, or they just change your internal mindset so that as a result, you behave in a different way & as a result your reality changes - is there really a difference? 😉

I hope this helps you to think of words in a different way, & that I can influence you to look into positive affirmations as a way to work on how you perceive the world. Whether you read them, write them, listen to them, and best of all - speak them -

You might find that you’re capable of making some magic of your own ✨

If this piece resonated with you, I encourage you to re-share it on a platform of your choice, or send it to a loved one directly to help me reach more readers who would appreciate or benefit from hearing my stories. 💖

Peace & Love,

Elisa
